ISCEC Conference in Matera, Italy, 11-12 December 2018 – Matera2019The International Scientific Committee on Economics of Conservation of ICOMOS has organized a meeting in Matera, Italy, on 11-12 December 2018, in the occasion of the 25th Year of the inscription of Matera in the UNESCO World Heritage list: “Matera: city of culture, city of nature. The city of the ecological system man/society/nature – the role of culture for circular city-region regeneration”. The meeting has been an occasion to discuss on the opportunities offered by the recognition of Matera as European Capital of Culture 2019 with international experts and local stakeholders, introducing concepts and strategies for heritage-led territorial development based on circular economy and circular city-region. The regeneration of cultural and natural capital is central in the circular economy / circular city-region approach as developed by the European Horizon 2020 CLIC research, in which many ISCEC members are involved. The final session was dedicated to comments and integrations to the ICOMOS / European Commission initiative “Cherishing Heritage” and the recommendations named “Quality Principles for Cultural Heritage Interventions”, which were sent to ICOMOS International as feedback to the zero version of the document. Follow-up of the ISCEC meeting will include an edited book and a plan of stakeholders’ meetings in 2019 in Matera, organized in cooperation with the Municipality, the Foundation Matera 2019, and ICOMOS Italy.
